At a glance (AI-assisted text)

Navigate trails and bush, then paddle Conestoga Lake in this 15-mile orienteering adventure race, solo or with a team, all within a 3-hour cutoff.

The vibe (AI-assisted text)

This event offers a unique blend of trail running, off-trail navigation, and paddling, making it a truly adventurous experience. It's perfect for those who love a challenge beyond a typical road race, attracting a mix of seasoned orienteers and curious newcomers. The team format encourages camaraderie, while the competitive element of a 3-hour cutoff keeps everyone pushing their limits.

Best for (AI-assisted text)

This race is ideal for adventurous runners and multi-sport athletes who enjoy a mental and physical challenge. It's particularly well-suited for those who thrive on navigation, off-road exploration, and working as part of a team. If you're looking to try something truly different from a standard 5K or marathon, this could be your next big adventure.

Race day (AI-assisted text)

Expect a focused but friendly atmosphere at check-in, where you'll receive your pre-plotted CalTopo maps, instructions, and punch cards. If you're new to orienteering, there's help available to get you started. The race kicks off promptly at 9:00 AM, with a hard 12:00 PM cutoff, so pacing and navigation are key. You'll transition between running on trails and through the bush, and paddling on Conestoga Lake, with teams sharing one kayak or paddleboard.

Personality (AI-assisted text)

The Zanfel Orienteering Race has an adventurous and slightly rugged personality, blending the thrill of competition with the joy of outdoor exploration. It's a race that values strategy and teamwork as much as raw speed. The vibe is supportive for beginners, yet challenging enough to satisfy experienced racers looking for a serious test of skill and endurance.

Weather snapshot (AI-assisted text)

Mid-April in Denton, Nebraska, typically brings variable spring weather. Runners should prepare for anything from cool, crisp mornings to mild, pleasant afternoons. There's always a chance of rain or wind, so dressing in layers and having appropriate gear for changing conditions is a smart move.

Terrain & course feel (AI-assisted text)

The course promises a diverse and challenging terrain. You'll be navigating a good part of the course on established trails, but also venturing "in the bush," meaning off-trail sections that could involve uneven ground and natural obstacles. Additionally, a significant portion involves kayaking or paddleboarding around Conestoga Lake, adding a water element to the mix.
